Things I like Thursday: the suite life

Nice relaxing evening at the Round Rock Express game on Wednesday.  Dan got to invite 10 people to share the suite with us.  This was a long and hard decision on who to invite.  It was our first game of the season for us.  Since we didn’t get a half share of season tickets this year, and we’ve both been so busy, we just haven’t had a chance.

Food, drink, baseball, and buddies.  That’s my kind of hump-day!

Dan let me pick out the food.  Ok, most of it.   I picked the mixed fajita dinner, it has  the most food I can actually eat on it and it’s good.   He ordered the drinks and the rest.  The veggie tray, fajitas, and tortilla chips and salsa were a big hit.   Rice and beans, not so much.

I’ll admit, I didn’t eat the rice and beans, I rarely do because I am a huge rice snob.  Extra fajita meat instead, drowned in pico and guacamole!  We had to get them to bring more meat, because my sister and I ate almost all of the beef before anyone else got there.

He has said before the dessert was a waste because there is always a ton left.  He ordered it anyhow and once again more than half was left.  He also ordered mini corndogs because they sounded good.  Over half of those were left too.  Who orders corndogs with Mexican food?

It was good to see our friends, I invited AK and her family too.  Dan doesn’t like “mixing” groups of friends, but I thought it was fine.  So funny to see her in real clothes, I rarely see her anytime but running.

Good to see many of our “south” friends way up North :-)  And on a weeknight!  So happy they got to come.  Missing one gal, tsk tsk, she was late.  Holy heck, look how much alike sister and I look.  Rarely does anyone think we look alike, but here, I can see it. (she’s on left)

It may have been 105 degrees outside, but there was a nice breeze outside, it never felt that hot at all and the box on the suite is completely shaded.  Plus the air conditioner inside was FREEZING!  So the heat was definitely not an issue.

My sister didn’t stay outside long.  I had just warned her that she needed to pay careful attention to left-handed batters (and quit playing on her phone).  Next pitch was a line drive back into the window behind us (about 3 feet from our heads).  She said she didn’t want to have to pay attention, so she went back inside.  Dan joked that was his master plan to “off me.”

Not sure what was going on, if it was the new medicines or what, but not only did I make it through the whole game without falling asleep, I was wired!  Usually I fall asleep after the 7th inning stretch, which is usually around 9 pm.  At 11 pm I was still totally wide awake.  Now if I can find the happy medium!

Very happy hour, or two

Had a great evening yesterday after work.  I took off a little bit early, to go run with AK from her house (it was all part of a plan).  She’s on her Boston Marathon taper right now. I told her I’d do whatever she needed to do for her run…this was her workout.

5 incredibly hot and sweaty miles.  My dumb self wore a navy blue shirt with sleeves, which didn’t really help things.  Plus Brushy Creek on the dam side provides no shade.  It was a good reminder of how I am not acclimated yet and it’s going to be a long hot summer.  It was only 90 at 5 pm when we started.  She started kicking it on the dam.  The only kicking I was doing was of my own rear end.

Went back to her house for the cool down and we were DRENCHED.  I was seriously dripping sweat all over her house.  I toweled off and rushed across the road to Z’Tejas where I was hosting a surprise happy hour/Boston Marathon pep-rally for her.

Unfortunately I was in the bathroom changing my shirt when they showed up!  She didn’t see my purse at the table though, so I was able to sneak up behind her and still get a reaction.  She was all smiles, made me so happy!

Great evening with the gals.  A little disappointed in the restaurants GF menu.  I ended up getting tuna and them just putting the sauces on the side.  There were no appetizers at all, a couple of salads, and then some big entrees.

We all wished her well and sent her off with hugs!  So proud of her!

Sunday Funday

First stop Sunday morning.   Zeitgeist biker bar, I found it on CitySearch.  Best Bloody Mary’s in Cali.  Long trolley ride, but Dan said he thinks it really is one of the best.  Total dive, but that’s probably what made it so fun.  And we even met a guy who randomly told us he loves Lucero, lol.

Enjoying it until the end

I even had a sip and liked it, and I don’t even like them generally.  It was super hot, so even if I wanted to, that’s all that I could handle, and I can handle hot.  Honestly, I just wanted the lemon and the pickled green bean.

Met one of the other couples and then headed to Boudin’s Bakery for lunch.  It was my idea, i’d walked by it several times and thought it was one of those local places we had to try.  Dan said that was the best grilled cheese he’s ever had (on their fresh baked sourdough).  He also had chili in a bread bowl.

I had chili and this spring salad with chicken.  The salad had Granny Smith apples, cranberries, chicken, mixed greens, tons of walnuts, and feta.  (Feta is supposed to be less reactive on your stomach, so I tried). At first I was bummed to have a salad instead of the 100 other things that involved bread on the menu.  But guess what?  The salad was EXCELLENT!  I loved it.

There was actually a moment when Dan was telling me how good that grilled cheese was, where I broke down and I said I was going to eat bread.  I was surrounded by bread all weekend and it smelled SO good.  Dan got upset with me and reminded me that if I got a reaction from it and got sick, my trip would be ruined.  He was right, but sitting just outside the bakery, smelling the bread, seeing the bread, hearing everyone talk about bread was hard.  I’m not that big of a bread person, but I do appreciate high quality bread.

So then I just joked about eating some.

Then started making our way to Alcatraz Ferry to meet the rest of our crew.

And on to the boat

Then they turned us loose on Alcatraz

I love lighthouses.  The one at Alcatraz is still active, I saw it every morning through the fog.

Sometimes I think I need one of these at home

While we were inside, the haze and fog cleared.  I  had no idea the island had so much plant and bird life, it was gorgeous!

And then we departed back to San Francisco to hurry up and get ready for the company dinner :-)

Pretty Pretty Pisco in San Francisco

After my run, I got showered, snacked on some of my fresh fruit, dressed and set off with my new friend Lacey to explore Fisherman’s Wharf, while our guys were in their meetings.  Sealions, shopping, goofy hats, and Farmer’s Markets…

The tiger hat is for football season, silly I know, but I thought it was cute.  (that’s Dan’s huge hoodie I am wearing).

The guys were supposed to get out at noon, so I didn’t eat anything when Lacey grabbed her breakfast clam chowder at the wharf.  BIG mistake.  I kept thinking they were getting out and then at 1 pm, they finally did.  Then everyone hung around at the hotel bar until 2:30!  I was getting grumpy.  While they were all drinking and snacking on the snack mix at the bar (which I couldn’t eat), I was dying.  I just about rolled some heads.  I was STARVING.

We finally headed to Scoma’s at 2:45, didn’t get seated for almost an hour.  Apparently I am the only one who gets hungry?  Or maybe it’s because I wasn’t drinking, so the beer wasn’t keeping me falsely full.  I shouldn’t have worried about spoiling my meal and just ate something before the super late lunch.

Supposedly one of the best places to eat in San Francisco.

I started off with a bay shrimp cocktail (which was tiny), good but little.  Everyone else  had raw oysters, blech.  I don’t get food that you need to mask with other things.

For my meal I had swordfish with italian grilled veggies.  Very tasty.  Worth whatever crazy price they charged for it.

Dan’s food was pretty awesome too, although he liked his co-workers roasted scallops better.  His was soft-shelled crab, prawns, and scallops, with veggies, served over rice, side of pasta with a light italian red sauce.  Not sure why it had pasta AND rice.  I ate all of his mushrooms and prawns that weren’t near his pasta.

After lunch it was exploring time.  Went to Ghiradelli Square where no one had room for or wanted to wait in line for ice cream (not sure why we needed to go then).  Then hitched a trolley to Chinatown.

Apparently the cold and mist did a number on my hair and makeup.

Look at that view of Alcatraz as we went up the hill to Chinatown

Chinatown didn’t last long, we then crossed through Little Italy to what I called the Titty District.  Not sure where it actually was, probably still in Little Italy, but there were a bunch of nude clubs on the main street.  Past those we found 2 fun places.  The VIN Club and Romelo (mixology bar).

Dan said we probably confused people and made them think we were either from Chicago or Alabama.  We both had Auburn on the front and Chicago on the bar (his shirt, my bag).  haha!

Yes, that’s me and the 1 drink I had on the trip.  I rarely drink, but I had to try the Pretty Pretty Pisco.  It was SO good.  I let everyone taste it.  In turn, I think the bar sold at least 12 more.  I should get commission ;-)

We cabbed it back to hotel to deliver half the crew back.  I was going to head to bed, but Dan pointed out we’d not had dinner.  It was late.  At that point, I wasn’t really into dinner.  So I had shrimp and crab cocktail, Dan had clam chowder in a bread bowl.  I tasted a bit of Lacey’s chowder which she got in a regular bowl, very unique, had little bits of prosciutto in it (not GF, I had 2 tastes).

I’ve not figured this look out yet.  It’s either get your hands away from my food or quit taking photos of me and my food.

We eventually walked back to the hotel.  The 3 of them had a nightcap.  I had a nighty-nighty.

Sugar Free Challenge: Day 7

LIFE

Dr.’s office called.  Said to keep my June 20 follow-up to discuss.  The only thing she mentioned is that my cholesterol is on the high side of normal, she said we’d talk about all of the rest later.  This ruined my day.  Maybe it’s silly, but I was the only one in my family that didn’t have that problem.  I know it’s genetic and sometimes you can’t get away from it.  I’m still mad.

And now I want to kick my Dr. for making the comment, “i’d be really shocked if your cholesterol isn’t in line”, especially with your diet and exercise.  I reminded him that my parents and my sister all have the problem.  Guess we’ll discuss when I go in.  The nurse said he’s not concerned about it though.

WORKOUT

2-a-day Tuesday.  Just don’t like my cardio and full body weights together.  I ‘m glad I am doing the 2-a-days again on Tue and Thur, like I used to.

Weights before work today.   Surprisingly good considering I haven’t been sleeping lately and I was fighting to stay awake on the drive to Austin.  I did have to skip those burpees, the pain in my lower right side is just too much when I do them.  Don’t feel it at rest though.

After work, I went to AK’s (who BQ’d again in San Diego), to check on her house and kitty.  Left the car there and ran at Brushy Creek (she lives very close).  Running while you are pissed off in weather that is too hot isn’t the smartest idea.  Nothing happened, it just isn’t smart.

FOOD

Pre-workout:  rice cake with almond butter

Post-workout:  Green Vegetarian’s migas (recipe from the restaurant in SA).  They were good, but not filling, I think I should have bulked it more with vegetables or added a side of refried beans like suggested.  I will have to post this one, it’s a keeper.

Breakfast:  overnight chia yogurt with pineapple, hot tea

Snack:  apple

Lunch:  Sunny mediterranean wrap, vegetable soup

Snack:   string cheese, carrots

Dinner:  Leftover cheeseburger meatloaf, salad, crash hot potatoes (crashed the boiled from the night before).  Dan told me he likes boiled better (probably because I used rosemary on the crashed, which he doesn’t like).  HUMPF!  Hot crash potatoes >regular new potatoes for sure.  The only reason I didn’t make them that way the first night, was because it would have taken an extra 25 minutes I didn’t have.

Snack:  Cottage cheese with strawberries (cup of each)

Memorial Day weekend recap

Ok, so it’s a week late.  Why?  Because the pictures were on Dan’s fancy waterproof digital camera and he only uploaded them to Facebook.  HUMPF!

We spent the holiday weekend up at Canyon Lake/Guadalupe River with friends.  Food, fun, lots of sun, and a little river.

Our hostess Melissa M. included groceries with the cabin rental, but I still brought some of my own food (and I don’t drink).   I’m just SO picky, that I always bring stuff just in case.  Salad (which I used on fajitas, burgers, and wraps), turkey wraps for the river both days, veggies, fruit, oatmeal, almond butter, cottage cheese,  lots of water.  I combined the food on hand with my food, worked out well.

I get asked a lot, doesn’t it bother me that everyone is drinking?  No.  I don’t mind drinking, I just choose not to 95% of the time.  I have many reasons, but I just don’t.

FRIDAY

Picked up Dan from work and we headed south.  Scouted some of the roads for running safety on our way in.  Met up with our group of friends at the cabins we’d rented.  Late dinner of yummy fajitas!

SATURDAY

I was rooming with Dan and our friend Robb.  2 snorers, especially after drinking.  Needless to say, I didn’t sleep well.

I woke up, got dressed, and hit the pavement.  VERY humid and i’d neglected to observe the elevation, it was pretty challenging.  Considering the weather and the route, it really wasn’t that bad of a run. Scenic hill country views, that is for sure.

Back to cabin, showered, dressed to float the Guadalupe River.  Texas is in an extreme drought, but the river IS floatable in certain areas.  We floated the “Horseshoe” which is pretty far north.  It wasn’t bad, only had to walk twice.

We had a little bit of a hike to put in on the river from the shuttle bus…

River time!  Melissa M., her husband Travis, and their doggie Zeus.

I’d just met this friend of Melissa M., she was friendly, even before the alcohol.

Post-river BBQ.  Burgers, turkey burgers, brats, and hot dogs.    Robb is a grill master, lol.  He spends a lot of time near the pool and grilling.

This is what happens when you fall asleep with Dan, Travis, and I watching a show called “100 best pranks”.  I think he still has salt in his belly button, lol.  He spilled that beer all over himself when he woke up. Poor Brian.

Eat up!

That’s my lonely plate on the table.  I had a turkey burger and half a burger patty (they were HUGE).  I had brought a bag of salad, so I added that to my burger too.

SUNDAY

Made up a pool-side body weight only strength session.  Better than nothing.

Moved our gang to Lonestar Floathouse for another type of river time.  Sitting.  Flow is low there, so floating isn’t really great, but sitting is fun.  Plus the floathouse has AWESOME food and people watching.

Our friend V came down from Lubbock :-)   Yes, I wore that towel all day long.  It’s easier to hide things to explain to people why I look like a freak.

Sitting

Someone decided the picnic table needed to be in the river too…

Sunday nights at the Floathouse are live music.  Good times, Midnight River Choir.  It was my first time seeing them.

Special appearance by Dub Miller.  Needless to say, I was SUPER excited, even if he did only play 1 song.  I miss him, he needs to come around more.

MONDAY

Started out the day with a short run.  I’d gotten cleaned up, dressed, and packed most of the car before anyone else woke up.

Drove back to Austin, stopped at Sears to order my new dishwasher!  Lunch at Fish City grill in Georgetown after picking up my car (OMG, their mexican shrimp cocktail is the BEST!).  Headed home for chores and to recover :-)

Sugar Free Challenge: Day 4

WORKOUT

I know every run can’t be excellent, but for the 2nd Saturday in a row, the whole run was a struggle.  I didn’t sleep at night, which certainly didn’t help.  I just never hit my stride.  My pace was what i’d consider slow for myself.  Plus I am at the point now where I need to start waking up earlier for long runs.  Although I am not training for anything, I need to run earlier…..and not get up early and mess around with the housework.

All in all, I was disappointed.  At least I knocked my goal mileage out, but it wasn’t up to quality AT ALL :-(   It’s days like these, especially when I have them consecutively, that makes me think I shouldn’t commit to any more races.  For 8 months my runs weren’t really affected, but now that they seem to be suffering, I just don’t know…

FOOD

Pre-Run:  GF oats with cinnamon and banana puree

I didn’t consume anything but water on my run.  Nuun after the run.

Post-Run:  Apple, with almond butter-cinnamon Ezekiel toast

Lunch:   half serving of chili, mixed sauteed veggie, and a chili cheese dog on slice of bread (other half serving of the chili)

Snack:  plain yogurt with crushed pineapple (in it’s own juice)

Snack:  Stopped in Waco for a break on the way North.  Jalapeno string cheese, apple, and a water.

Dinner:   I chose Dickey’s BBQ, which just happened to be right in front of Fat Daddy’s Parking Lot.  So we found a spot near the venue, walked to dinner.  Not sure Dan liked it all that much, but he totally got the wrong sides (stuff I would never touch).  I got smoked turkey, salad, jalapeno pinto beans.  I ended up mixing it all together as a salad (I got some weird looks from the next table).  Topped it all with bbq sauce, pickles, and more jalapenos.  No photos, really, it looked like pig-slop, but it tasted great.  Drank water, because I didn’t think I could handle plain tea.

FUN

We walked to the field where the “Fat Fest” was and Lucero was playing.  I was thirsty, it was beer, liquor, or soda.  I had a diet Coke.  I tried not to and don’t even usually drink sodas, but it was SO hot and about halfway through the evening I caved.  So I had a slip-up in my SF quest, but I wasn’t about to drink beer!

The event was called Fat Fest, because the bar it was hosted by was called Fat Daddy’s.  It was um, an interesting array of people, but then again, Lucero always has a huge and varied following.  This was very different from their Austin fans.  Lets just say I felt old, but classy, and skinny (even though I was having an episode).

It was hot as heck and no breeze.  Plus, even though it was outdoors, the smoke was killing me, apparently everyone smokes there.  Sweat+dust+smoke=nasty.

Heather J., wish you were there!  (my friend HayJay loves Ben Nichols).

I thought this note on their pedal was super funny!  It says “this doesn’t like beer!”  Haha, me neither.

We had a great time, they played for about 2 hours.  I started feeling badly toward the end, very low in my right back/inside.  Don’t know what the heck it was, never had pain there before.  I kept asking Dan where my kidneys were, he didn’t think that was it.

After the show, I ran into HEB to get a bottle of water and some microwave popcorn.  I am not a popcorn gal, but I was hungry.  So Dan and I had popcorn and watched “Fun with Dick and Jane”.  I fell alseep at some point near midnight, which is super late for me.

Now screening applications

I’ve decided from now on, I think I need to screen travel buddies, especially for work trips.    I traveled with two people, both men on this trip.  I’ve had my share of bad women as well, just not in a while.

I went up to the Dallas/Fort Worth area for two days.  First day in Arlington, second day in McKinney.  I’m shocked I made it through two days without losing my mind.  At least one person was good company.

Here are some of the criteria I think I am going to look at, based on my 2 most recent work trips, but this applies to anyone I guess:

  • Being on time.  We were late leaving both days, late to our meeting the 2nd day.  Even though Dan is late everywhere, I HATE being late.

  • Preparedness.  The maps printed were not what they were supposed to be for.  The presentation was only 1 hour, it needed to be 3.  Guess who had to save the day and do a impromptu presentation? (I wasn’t even supposed to be there!)

  • Driving.  Be at least a decent driver and don’t kill me, that’s all I ask.  That and maybe having some sense of direction.  Knowing left from right can go a long way.

  • Be thoughtful.  I’m just going to say that I didn’t get lunch until 3:30 pm on Tuesday and never got one on Monday.  Luckily on Monday I found a mini-Starbucks and was able to get a cup of fruit and a latte at 2 pm.  That was my lunch.  Yes, I am still mad.

  • Someone who doesn’t want to eat every meal at McDonalds.  Yes this happened.  I don’t want to eat ANY meal at McDonald’s.  Sorry.  I know it’s cheap, but I don’t care.  There are other options that don’t suck so bad. A grown man threw a hissy fit both days about eating at McDonalds.  Really?  My other coworker was scared the whole time I think.

  • Someone who appreciates decent food.  Really, is that too much to ask?  We are traveling on expenses, you will get paid back.  It doesn’t have to be fancy, but I want at LEAST what i’d make for myself if I was at home or better.

  • Speaking of tips…if you aren’t going to tip, then don’t eat with me.  It’s not the server’s fault we don’t get reimbursed for tips or that you are a cheap skate.  If this really bothers you, hit the drive-thru after I eat.

  • Accessibility.  If you wont give your coworkers your cell phone number, I am not traveling with you.  I have to be able to communicate with you, especially if you have the car keys.

  • Flexibility.  You just have to be.  Especially when you are not alone.

  • Manners.  Please control your bodily functions.

  • Common Sense.  (ok, that’s where I am probably asking too much)

Granted, I didn’t take my “emergency food”, which I never forget, but I shouldn’t have to!  On Tuesday I walked in the rain to Starbucks to get my breakfast.  I enjoyed the rain and the walk, but I was just happy there were places to eat near our hotel that I could walk to (which is what I did for Monday’s dinner).  I am glad I bought a Kind bar and a banana when I got breakfast, anticipating my coworker would be a brat.

Unfortunately both days during lunch, I was at his mercy and that did not pan out well.  On Tuesday, while I was enjoying an iced tea for lunch and watching my coworker down a supersize fry and a triple cheeseburger, I plotted how I was going to hitch-hike back to Austin.

Saints, sweat, and songs

RUN

I woke up early to meet up with my friend.  She was running one of her longest pre-marathon training runs in preparation for her 11th full.  I was going to meet her for the 2nd half.  I hadn’t run long in 2 weeks, which was killing me mentally.  We were tagging onto Al’s Ship of Fools, which is a running group (mostly ARC people) here in Austin.   I ran a mile from the gym to the park, but didn’t see my friend.  Right before 7 am, she came flying from the water coolers….no water.  Poor thing just ran 11 miles and couldn’t get a drink.  And she was SOAKED it was super hot and humid.  Her shorts looked like they weighed 10 lbs.

We set off for the 10.71 route through what is called the “hills”.  It’s an area mostly west of Mopac back where Hula Hut is and then north of there.  Very nice and safe area.  I told her to set the pace, I was just going to be happy to make it the distance.  I told her if I didn’t feel ok, i’d turn at the 7.71 point (which was another run option for the group that morning).

Well about 3 miles in, she got sick.  Good thing we’d moved out of the neighborhood and into Tarrytown where there was a Starbucks and then again on the “drag” aka UT campus at another coffee house.  Poor thing kept apologizing to me.  I was just concerned about her making it back.  She insisted on finishing her miles and deemed that run “the worst of 2011″.

Honestly, it didn’t matter to me that we were running a pace much slower than usual.  I enjoyed her company and I was really glad I was there to get her through it.  I know it’s embarassing for people to see you when you are weak, but good friends don’t care about their pace, or stopping to walk with you, or waiting for you to collect yourself.

It may have not been the nicest run on the Garmin, but mentally for me, it was a good run.  She called me a saint.  I corrected her and said, nope, that’s just what friends do.

LIFE

After the run, I ran back to the gym, showered, then drove south to the ARC meeting for Daisy planning.  May 8, don’t forget.  Need a discount?  Email me or leave me a comment ;-)

Then home to work in the yard all day. This wasn’t easy, because I was not motivated to do this AT ALL.  Rare for me.  I like the yard stuff.  Had to finish our flowerbed (was put on hold when Dan left town for a week for work).  Only took twice as much rock as planned.  Expensive project, but it looks great.  I’ll try to take photos after the grass gets mowed, lol!  We also had to replace our front porch light, which is 20 feet in the air.  Lets just say there was an incident in the wee hours on Wednesday morning where a lightbulb, a resident bird, and glass were involved.  We (Dan), safely got up there and replaced it.

FUN

Eventually we got cleaned up and moving.  Decided on dinner late, so nothing was really open that was fast (but sounded good).  So we opted for Taco Cabana.  I love their fajitas.   And I also love the rare occasions when Dan will actually share something with me (even though it was fajitas for 2).

Then on to Saxon Pub, which is probably my favorite inside music venue in Austin (maybe close tie to Cactus Cafe).  It was a special night with Willie Nelson Tribute by one of Dan’s favorite local bands, Uncle Lucius (they performed the whole Red Headed Stranger Album) and then Reid Wilson and his So Called Friends did a few more tunes.  Reid chose “All the Girls i’ve Loved Before” as one of his songs and it was so AWESOME. My face still hurts from laughing and smiling.

I was surprised I was still awake enough to drive home when it was all over.  It was a heck of a long day.   I was starving when we got home, so we each had a snack.  It was after midnight, so I had a Ezekiel grilled cheese.  It was sooo good.  Not sure if it was the amount of time i’d been without real bread, the fact I love grilled cheese, or the fact that anything tastes good at 2 am ;-)

Diva Dash

The 4:30 alarm came earlier than expected, especially with the late night before.  I’m not a coffee drinker, but I drove down the street to the only open place to get a cup to wake myself up.  I got to working in Dan’s home office.  Luckily I had everything I needed from everyone at work (turned out they were all busy too, so it worked out we did this Friday night/Saturday morning).  I was able to get the report to my boss at 6:45!  Had just enough time to make sure Michele was fed and dressed.  I tossed the laptop into the car, just in case, and we took off for the race.

We met my sister, mom, and the other girls at the course about an hour before.  Just as I predicted, everything was unorganized.  At least the shuttle part worked well for the early waves, which was our case.

We were in the 9 am wave.  When we registered that was the earliest wave, before they opened registration back up and kept adding more people, grrr!  We jumped into the corral as soon as they’d let us.  I didn’t want to be in the back of over 300 girls (there were 10 waves, 15 mins apart, over 3000 women total).  Met a girl at the start who was really nice, some of our non-runner friends were teasing her because she was alone.  (I often attend races alone, if I didn’t, i’d probably never do anything!).  I made the remark to her and the other girls that they shouldn’t tease her, because she was probably going to smoke them.  (which she did).  Here is a photo of the start.  That’s all of us in neon pink (can’t see me, i’m the last one in our group).  Said fast-girl  is already like 50 yards ahead and stayed that way.

I separated myself from the group almost immediately.  I knew that not everyone was going to finish together or even stay together.

I wasn’t really sure about strategy.  Was I supposed to have one?  I held behind the lead pack during the first run, because I wasn’t really sure.  After the first obstacle (balance on ropes), I passed a bunch of girls.  I ended up right behind superfast girl who won our wave.

In addition to the balance rope, there was a ball pit with giant balls people rolled at you, a maze, a really long tire course, a rope wall, and the series of water trampolines you had to navigate.

There were 2 waves before us, so there were still some gals on the course from the earlier waves.  Especially at the last obstacle, which was the water trampolines.  I had to wait 3 minutes to even attempt that portion, which was super annoying (there were only 2 sets of that obstacle).  At any point, you could take a time penalty if you wanted to skip something.  I should have skipped that one and took the penalty.  Even when I got on the trampolines, I had to wait for the girl in front of me to finish, which was forever.

I finished in 27-ish minutes (gun time).  It wasn’t chip timed.  The method for their timing was annoying and they didn’t track the people who took time penalties really at all.  They didn’t write down your time until you’d gone through the zig-zagged corral behind the mass of girls in front of you.  Not very accurate or organized at all.  Super-fast girl finished about 75 yards in front of me.  (come to find out later, she’s quite the athlete, placed in the top 10 in the marathon and won Warrior Dash central Tx, my friend Megan knows her!)

Alison and her coworker and sister finished about 20 minutes after me.  Too cute.  Everyone finished in 1 piece, although Michele twisted her ankle on 1 obstacle (may be sprained).

Here is our group, plus our friend Erin and one of her friends (non-pinks).

Another group shot…

My sister, Michele, and I, being ourselves after the race!

Not sure how a race with so many flipping sponsors and put on by a major fitness magazine had such weak packets (just an old magazine, socks, and a cinch bag) and post-race refreshment (beer, Luna bars, water, Honest T and food you had to buy).  We were all STARVING when we got to Kerbey Lane in South Austin and the wait for 10 people took way longer than it should have :-(   My food was totally worth it though.  I had the Nabil’s mid-east feast.

We then went to our nearest gym locations (yay for chains) and then met up for pedicures.  I hadn’t had one since last summer.  I have a rule that I don’t get them while training, unless it’s a special occasion (like being in a wedding).  I need my feet tough for the hot and humid races and training.  Since I am not training for anything, I figured we could all use the treat!

It was the perfect ending to Diva Day :-)   All in all, it was a good time.  The most important part was having fun with the girls, which was accomplished.  Plus my 2 BBFs met and loved each other.  I’ve come to realize with my last few events, that even if the race isn’t what you expected, sometimes the company makes it completely worth the while!
