This was the day I remembered not feeling well, like when the switch flipped and I never felt normal after that.  I had a great time, but it was a turning point in my health

Things I like Thursday: good time Saturday night

We had a few people over last weekend.  party 5

Ok like 16.

Dan and I hosted our very first party and first house concert, featuring Drew Kennedy.  The concert was also used as a kick-start for his new album, which he played in it’s entirety.  No, it’s not cheap, but it’s really a neat experience to go to.  Small number of people and very intimate.  This was the 3rd or 4th i’ve been to, but our first time hosting.  It was hard, because we couldn’t invite everyone, in fact, I didn’t have anything to do with the logistics other than being there and getting the massive amount of groceries and helping food prep.

concert 2

The food was awesome, or at least I thought so.  I finally got to use my new Auburn serving platter!  That’s homemade jalapeno summer sausage that my dad made.

part 1

Dan smoked a bunch of meat (bacon wrapped pork tenderloins, Canecuh sausages from Alabama, and a brisket), made his mom’s potato salad, beans, I made my mom’s famous 7 layer dip.  We also had people bring oriental slaw, 7 layer greek dip, brownies, an awesome fruit bowl, and lots of drinks (our whole kitchen table was a bar).concert 1

party 4

During the first break at the concert, we sang Dan happy birthdayconcert 4

and they dug into his cookie cake (writing in Auburn orange of course!)

concert 3

I think it’s safe to say, a good time was had by all.  The evening ended with a 18 person slumber party!  It’s a good thing we have room.

The next morning the yummy bbq was converted into breakfast tacos.  I cropped this so you can’t see the disaster my house was on Sunday morning!concert 5

It got cleaned up for the most part, but then we all went to the softball benefit and I never finished the job.  Not spotless, but it’ll do until the weekend.

Fun facts Friday: like momma

I realized while I was in San Francisco last week, that I am more like my mom that I thought.  This is a good and a bad thing.

  • I make lists.  When I am bored I make lists of lists I need to make.
  • On both flights last week, I made lists on the notepad of my phone.  I edited the first one on Wednesday, but I originally wrote it April 4 on my way out to Cali.  If my mom knew how do do this on her new iphone, she would.lists
  • Lists lead me to be more organized most of the time and hopefully worry less.  Unless stuff on said list doesn’t get done soon enough.
  • I am a planner.  I do better when I plan.  When I don’t plan, it’s not the end of the world.  Unless it means I don’t get to eat, then all hell breaks loose.
  • She has the same haircut as me.  I had it first though.
  • We both lost our weight on Weight Watchers.
  • She likes to fish with my dad.  I spent many hours fishing with my dad when I was in college. Hopefully as soon as June rolls around (and the legislative session is over), I can take some time off to go with them.   Although, spring and fall fishing is way better.
  • I am frugal.  My parents spoiled me as a kid, but it was never at full price.  When Solo Serve was around, we shopped there.  Ross, TJ, and Marshall’s are faves these days for both mom and I.  And I love a good outlet mall store.  My first truck, yes, it was brand new, but my Sonic wages and tips paid for that sucker.
  • I worry.  ALOT.  This is bad bad bad for the health.
  • Both of my parents snack alot.  I’ve gotten better but I still eat when I cook.  This is something i’ve never been able to nix.
  • When I am at work, I worry about all of the stuff I need to do at home.  I am getting better about worrying about work while at home.
  • One of the really bad things I do is let the snark come out full force or snip.  I have huge issues with my tone.  My mom is really bad about this.  I am trying to be better, but Dan harshly reminds me of this often.

The bad I am really going to have to try hard to fix for my sanity and for my health.  It’s not hard to see that some of my habits are very type A and type A’s have been shown to have increased risk for stress issues.

Forced rest for the weary

I had the perfect plan this week.  Slow.  Take it easy at work.  Get extra sleep.  Recover from my surgery.  Go home to see baby Evan and my parents Friday afternoon after work.

NONE of that happened.

Although I was off all medication except surgery vitamins and antibiotic, I was a zombie on Monday at work.  I told everyone I was just going to chill in my office and do my thing.  I am glad i’d lowered my standing desk, because standing wasn’t in my best interest.  Neither were the jeans I wore to work.  Word to the wise, I don’t care what kind of surgery you have, the water retention all goes to your middle.  I wore leggings the rest of the week.  Also not flattering, but at least I wasn’t uncomfortable.

Monday was a long day.  So long, that at the 2nd to last stop light of my ride home, I fell asleep sitting at the light.  I was that jerk who didn’t move and got honked at.  Not good.  I had to go back to Austin for a LUNA photo that evening and I had Dan drive me back after I attempted a 30 minute nap.

The rest of the week was slightly better, but with this week being the last week of legislative filing for bills, work was FLOODING in.  I worked long and non-stop all week.  I was a bad girl and moved my desk back to standing.  #1 I am not supposed to lift anything for 3 weeks and #2 standing probably not the best idea.  But I honestly concentrate so  much better standing, I had to.

I got home from work last night at 9 pm.  By 9 pm last night i’d planned to be watching tv with my parents at their house and visiting with them.  My dad had cataract surgery on Wednesday and i’d wanted to visit him.  Plus baby Evan is over a month old now and I haven’t seen him in exactly a month :-(  It was only supposed to be a day trip, but that’s better than nothing. Talked to my mom when I got off of work and she begged me to just stay home this weekend and rest (she doesn’t know about the surgery, she just knows I’ve been working alot and she knows i’m supposed to be reducing stress).

Instead Friday night was a very late dinner (luckily I had leftovers from Duck Dynasty night at our house).  Yes, I make cajun food every Wednesday for Duck Dynasty, I should start featuring what we have each week.  I tried to make Dan wear camo, maybe next week ;-)  I had made cajun rubbed pork roast that i’d pinned  (got great reviews), but neither of us really liked it much, I think we like spice way too much and it needed way more.  I ended up repurposing the leftovers into a salad one night and for cajun spiced spuds last night.  Dan loved the spuds idea (I doctored the pork with extra cajun spice, put his in a baked potato with cheese and onions).

I crashed out around 11 pm which is late for me.  Dan tried to move me upstairs, but since I have to sleep in a certain position, I asked him to leave me down in the chair, where i’d passed out.  Would have been fine, if Missy wasn’t being a brat and jumping all over me.  Kind of hard to anticipate an aerial assault in your sleep.  He wanted to lock her in the bathroom, but I wouldn’t let him.

So my Saturday now consists of:  Dan leaving to go to FW to have fun without me, me running errands, getting a haircut, and watching Redbox.  Dan ordered me to stay at home, minus the haircut I booked before he woke up.  Hey, I am in DIRE need.  Too bad my color lady lives where my parents live.  I only like her to touch my hair, but the color is trashy looking right now.  I may cave and hit Walgreen’s before I let someone else touch my hair!  At least it’ll be cut in a few hours, that’s half the battle.

Getting home from work so late last night and working so much when I shouldn’t have been working much at all is a reminder to me to SLOW DOWN.  I am supposed to be healing my adrenal fatigue and i’m now healing from the unrelated surgery.  So that’s just what I am going to do :-)

Burned

Birthday weekend was a bit disappointing.  My dad didn’t really care to be in town, Dan was home for only 24 hours, dinner atmosphere wasn’t great, my parents argued all weekend, blah blah blah.  I didn’t feel like I really got a weekend.  In fact, I almost took a sick day today for myself.  I never do that, but it sure was tempting.

I did enjoy some two yoga classes (2 new ones!) and two Galloway runs over the weekend.  As much as I want to run though, I am wondering if Galloway may be still harming my adrenals.  I don’t want to further my burnout.

Speaking of burning.  Some kids in a hot-rod started an oil fire in the parking lot of Cavendar’s yesterday.  I was lucky enough to be parked right next to them.  So my car ended up being covered in fire extinguisher chemicals.  I needed to wash it anyhow, but I wasn’t planning on running it to the carwash immediately to get all of the chemical crap off of my car!  I guess at least my car didn’t catch on fire.

I didn’t find boots at Cavendar’s, but I didn’t find ones I finally loved at Shepler’s.  Only $400 with a 25% off coupon.  Even with birthday money, I can’t bring myself to buy them.  I already have grief spending $140 on running shoes.

Sunday night I threw split chicken breasts on the grill and turned around to take the pan inside and get a clean one.  In that amount of time the skin/fat flamed on the grill and charred the heck out of the outside of the chicken.  I finished the chicken in the stove, but I was SO mad.  All of my seasonings were burned off.  The chicken was still good, but not as good as it would have been.  Bummer.  Plus then I had to peel all of the char off of all of the chicken.  I never do that, so mad at myself.

What wasn’t disappointing is that my “nephew” was born on Saturday morning!  I talked to my BFF on the phone Friday night, they sent her to the hospital.  I talked to her again Saturday morning around 10.  80 minutes later I got a text message with a photo from her husband that he was here!  I couldn’t believe it!  When I talked to her last, she was saying she was going to take a nap and chill.  Pretty sure that never happened, lol!  I want to post pics, but didn’t clear that with momma yet ;-)  I don’t want to be disrespectful and post pics of him everywhere if she doesn’t like that.

I am dying to meet him.  I wish I didn’t have commitments all week and through the weekend :-(  I am hoping Saturday afternoon I can get down to San Antonio to spend some time with them!  I didn’t want to stress her out with more visitors and chaos than was already happening over the weekend, nor did I want to interrupt them when they first get home.   This was REALLY hard for me, especially seeing family and extended family show up at the hospital, but I kept telling myself it was better to wait to see them.

This is going to be the longest week EVER!  I cannot wait until Saturday afternoon.

Christmas Recap

A little shopping.  Not really for gifts, just because I felt like it (weird, I am not really a shopper for no reason).  I went to Bass Pro AND Cabela’s (2x) in one week.  I did pick up some fun spice packets and a gun cleaning kit for dad.  One of these days I will actually look around the whole store at both places.  Christmas isn’t really the best time to leisurely explore a mega-store.   The decor alone is enough to take half a day to look at!IMG_0002

A little cooking.  Ok, a lot of cooking.  I love to cook for my parents.  Unfortunately, braising liquid from some ribs poured down my arm and gave me a really big and severe burn on Sunday afternoon. It’s really big and ugly :-(  I sent Dan and my BFF actual photos.  I will spare you that.  Neither of them were amused.

Like my Astros pjs? (I am blocking the star on accident)  Dan bought me those a long time ago in the Houston airport on a trip home to see me.  Back then the Astros weren’t near as bad.  Eh, I still love the pj’s and my baseball.IMG_0015

A little time in the country.  You know, looking for pregnant cows for 2 hours with your dad, hunting, and making sausage.  Simple country folk things.  My parents don’t even live in the country, but it’s pretty darn close to their house.

Tamales.  It’s whats for Christmas Eve dinner…always.  I used to think it was a south Texas thing, but my friend Alison pointed out it’s a Tex-Mex influence thing (she’s from El Paso and they do tamales and chalupas).  So it’s a regional thing I guess. Mom buys hers from Central Market, gluten and lard free.  I’m weird and this year I crumbled mine over blue corn chips and ate them like nachos with queso and guacamole.  Dang I wish I had a Central Market closer to me.IMG_0016

Gift pelicans.  Why?  Because my parents are trying to sell their house and I told my mom not to bother with a tree this year.  Instead I decided they needed to be around the pelican in their nautical themed living room.  Hence the gift pelican.IMG_0014

If you listen to Adam Corolla podcast, the pelican thing is even funnier.  Yes, a few months ago Dan got me hooked on his man-crush, Adam Corolla, and now I am addicted.  I LOVE him.  I hope he comes to Texas again soon, because I’d love to see him live.  I loved him on Loveline and the Man Show, but his podcast is awesome.  It’s definitely not for everyone, but most days I swear he takes thoughts straight from my head.

Santa brought my mom a Garmin 405.  She wasn’t all that excited because it’s complicated for her compared to her current 301.  I just about have her convinced to just get an iphone and use RunKeeper or something similar.  Now trying to get dad to shell out money for 2 smart phones and data plans, lol!  They are both anti-smart phones and texting.  I’m thinking I see a conversion in the spring ;-)

Spent hours on Christmas day trying to teach my mom how to use an itouch.  If you’ve never met my mom, she has talons for fingernails.  This does not bode well for itouch.  This may be the deal breaker on an iphone for her.  No matter how she tried to tap the screen, she kept having issues.

Christmas night was spent curled up in my chair with Missy next to the Christmas tree, listening to the windstorm outside and watching crap tv.  Savoring the time off before having to go back to work :-)

Change of pace

Sometimes you get something you need exactly when you need it.  For me, it was a change of pace.  A change of scenery.  A change in people.

Reasons to smile in the last week:

-Took my pregnant BFF to finish her Christmas shopping on Friday.  It made my week to see her.  Plus we completed her gift list and spent good quality time together.

-I got to feel baby Evan move :-)  This auntie cannot wait for the little guy to get here.  I am hoping he comes for my birthday :-)

-I had off on Friday.  I worked only about 30 minutes, and that’s because people wouldn’t quit texting me.  I didn’t use the work iphone but once to look at a few emails. Working 0 would have been ideal, but some of my coworkers apparently didn’t get the memo to not bother me.

-I went hunting with my dad on Saturday.  Afterwards got to hang out with some of his old fire department friends at the bunkhouse, which was nice.  Met a couple of new people too, younger guys from the department that hunt around there.

-Made sausage with mom, dad, and a family friend on Sunday morning.  Making sausage is something we’ve always done at least annually in our family since the beginning of time (hello, we are small town Texas!).  I haven’t participated since high school, because I’ve not been around.  This was my dad’s 2nd time this year and we had a great time.

-I went to church twice in 2 days.  Once on Sunday, once on Christmas eve.  Lots of time to think and things to think about.

-Dad and I went to feed our neighbor’s cows on Saturday and got to see a brand new baby calf.  We searched for another cow that was expecting for 2 hours and never found her that day.  Apparently she was having the baby somewhere, so there are 2 new baby cows!

-I ran Sunday-Tuesday at home.  Not terribly exciting but it was different.  Nice to run asphalt and not worry about traffic.  I just wish my muscles weren’t bothering me.

-I photographed some of my old family photos with my new phone.  Looking at the old stuff really made me smile.

-Good family time.  Wish my sister had been around, but she is off in NM with her BF.  It was nice to just enjoy each other’s company and the time off.

I’m back home now.  Perfect drive home, no traffic and no dumb drivers!  When I got out of the car, the temperature had dropped 30 degrees.  Finally got cold weather for Christmas, even if it did come at the end of the day!

Merry Christmas all!
