Giving back

I can’t believe it’s taken me  a week to post about the 2013 Austin Marathon.  Like always, I volunteered, no running.  I’ve never run Austin, don’t know I ever plan to.  Every year when it’s all said and done, I FEEL like i’ve run one, no joke.  Long hours, no real breaks, and standing all weekend long.  But every bit of it is fun and rewarding.

This is when the expo first opened as people started flooding in.  20,000 runners over 2 days.

I love the energy of the expo and talking to all of the runners.  This year I was t-shirt exchange lead in packet pickup.  I had AWESOME volunteers.  Mostly college kids (had the UT Lasso’s, premed fraternity, and a few other groups).  And I made a new friend from San Diego (him and his buddies came from California with a friend who was running).  Hi Larry!photo 4

The most interesting and humbling experience?  Majority of the race packets were put together by visually impaired men and women.  I wasn’t sure how that was going to work out, but it did.

I overheard 2 of the girls from UT’s LASSO group saying how awesome I was (I was behind the curtain).  Woohoo, the kiddos liked me :-) photo 3

My buddy Megan is the packet pick-up captain and she does a damn good job at it.  I recruited AK this year to join the leaders team.2013 marathon expo, ak mk mb

I will certainly be back next year!  I can’t wait!

Long way from last year

This time last year I was running a PR in Houston, only to break that PR at the end of the month at 3M (which is my standing half PR).  I had a great time in Houston with June.  I didn’t feel well the morning of the race, but I did fine in the race.  3M was great, I couldn’t believe what a great day I had and it was another fun time with friends.

9 months ago I was blogging about running Disney this weekend here.  Bought my costume, made my travel arrangements, only to have to cancel it all :-(  I even had a hair appt to die my hair dark for the next month to go with my costume!  I’d made plans with friends and family that lived in Orlando and was really looking forward to time with my gal friends who were traveling from Austin.

Instead I won’t be running Disney, or Houston, or 3M, all of which are this weekend.  The best I can hope for is a walk or some yoga.  I can’t even bring myself to go to volunteer at 3M, which is my favorite race.  I’m just too upset about it.

Wonder if people will look at me strange if I go walk in my Snow White costume (meant for Disney) on Saturday morning?  Or maybe yoga?  I think I could scar some people for life with that.

I am going to keep my scheduled time off, since I had to beg for it.  I am going to relax and try to focus more on me and less on work and worrying about everything.

Still waiting on the latest round of tests and becoming impatient.  It was supposed to take 7-10 days and it’s been longer than that :-(  Maybe tomorrow I will hear more.

Race Report: Shiner Beer Run

I will first say, had I been not letting work rule my life, this race would have been a lot easier.

We left for Shiner on Saturday afternoon.  Headed straight to packet pick-up at the Brewery.Image

Then to the hotel, got settled in and ready for dinner.  Back to Shiner to eat at Werners.  It may be a good restaurant, but it wasn’t on Saturday night.  We have 2 overcooked steaks, burnt appetizers, and dry chicken.  Plus they were out of sweet potatoes and ranch dressing (which made half our table very sad).  We still had a great time, even if the food wasn’t great.

After dinner, we headed to Buccee’s to get beer and dessert.  Since i’m a old lady, I went back to the room to finish my book and try to wind down.  Unfortunately I did not wind down. Then around midnight I couldn’t stop scratching!  Either I had an allergic reaction to something in the bed or something was biting me.  I had to take Nyquil to knock myself out to get sleep, which I hate to do.

Race Day

I actually slept later than I usually do.  Got dressed and headed to the lobby for breakfast, then loaded up in the car and headed to Shiner.

The start was crowded.  Narrow street with 500 5K people and 1000 half marathoners.  We barely made it through the massive portapotty lines before the start!  The first mile was pretty congested.  I tried not to waste too much energy bobbing and weaving.

The course was ok, I didn’t mind it, but it wasn’t terribly scenic.  Beginning and end were at the brewery, miles surrounding those were residential.  The bulk of the race was really rural, including a mile of unpaved road with big rocks (so not used to that!).  It was definitely not flat.

It was pretty warm and very humid.  Luckily the sun went away, or we’d probably fared much worse.  Everyone finished in once piece :-)  Jenn completed her first half, YAY!Image

Dan didn’t get there in time for my finish :-(  How many halves have I run?  He’s never seen me finish a half.  The ones he did attend, he didn’t make in time.  HUMPF.  I even finished exactly at 10:20 am like I said I would.

My time was ok.  I knew it wouldn’t be a PR, it was too warm and I’m not trained up for it.  I am happy with what it was for the conditions and having run last weekend too.  A little bitter I didn’t win an age group beer stein, just because they were so cool!

I didn’t indulge in the beer and bbq at the end, none of it was very gluten free friendly.  Instead, we ate at Black’s BBQ in Lockhart.  It wasn’t free, but it was good and I had more options.  Plus the last thing I wanted right after running was bbq.  3 hours later, it sounded more appealing :-)

Good weekend, although it seemed really short.  It was my first time to do an out of town race with a group and we had so much fun!  I think Dan even had fun with people he didn’t know :-)  I can’t wait for the next one!

Jingle Bell Half

Jingle Bell Half

Mom was super disappointed with the weather and her performance in San Antonio in November. My sister and I drove her to a half last Saturday. She was 20 seconds from finishing in her desired 3 hours. Not a PR, but she was happy. Semi-cool and drizzly. Not ideal weather, but better than San Antonio was. She got 3rd in her age group, so that made her happy.
Sister and I ran it too, she did Galloway with mom, completely untrained. I used it as a training run.

Guess I should start training now, since I have it as a training run?

Shattered

So my Garmin 405 which i’d had forever (was a gift right before my first marathon) died last month.  I was heartbroken.

I’d won a Soleus at Dallas Whiterock back in December.  I took it out of the box once and didn’t like it.  Didn’t seem very user friendly, and it wasn’t the one that had upload capability.  I am going to probably sell it on Craigslist or use it as a silent auction item for the LUNA Breast Cancer Fund fundraiser in September.  (September 14, mark your calendars!)

Then along came the Motoactiv.  AK has had one since December and loves it.  I ran with mine for 2 weeks.  I hadn’t learned half of what it could do, but I liked what I had learned.

And then this happened…

I was so upset.  I know it was an accident, but seriously?  It fell from less than 3 feet and shattered.  The band was on it at the time, so I am sure that  only helped speed the fall.  It still works and I used it since then, but the glass is barely in there.    And then last night, a small piece of the glass popped out, so now it’s a safety hazard.  Apparently Gorilla glass isn’t as durable as they say.

So $75 later, it’s being shipped to the Motorola service center in Dallas, where they will see if they can fix it.  If not, I have no unit and am $75 poorer for the fee and then the cost of the unit.  My fingers crossed that they can fix it.

Destination Orlando

Yesterday morning

Megan:  It’s the 10th year anniversary of my first marathon in Jan 2013, which was Disney.  I’m going to run it again.  It’s the 20th anniversary of the race.

Me: ok

Megan:  You should do it too.

Me:  No more marathons.

Megan:  Run the half then.

Me:  Ok.

Geez, my arm is easily twisted.  So i’m registered for the half, will cheer her on for the full the next day.  Trying to talk a few more girls from our circle into going.  Plus my college roommate lives down there, she wanted to do Princess a few years ago, trying to get her to do this one instead.  Not to mention all of my new Orlando friends I met at the LUNA Summit a few weeks ago.

Funny thing, i’ve never  been or had the desire to go to Disneyland or Disney World.  I guess I am weird.

I’m sure it’ll be fun, after all, it’s the Happiest Place on Earth!

Austin Marathon weekend

This past weekend was one of my “give back events.”  What the Austin Marathon means to me is volunteering.  I volunteer every year and i’ve never run the event.  I love being involved on the volunteering side, just like for Decker Half Marathon.

The slogan may have been eat, run, sleep, repeat.  But this weekend was volunteer, volunteer, volunteer.  I went downtown on Friday and stayed until late Saturday.  I had a great time and loved it, but man, not used to standing so much.  I felt like i’d run a marathon after the first 2 days of standing for 12 hour days.

This was the first year I’ve done packet pick-up which was incredibly fun and fast paced (so much so, that I never even got to look at the expo, which I heard was awesome).  Plus I was a team lead, which was super cool, thanks Megan! (here she is assigning our first crew).

My job for the weekend

The masses in for their packets.  Friday was pretty steady, Saturday was SLAMMED! I was one of 2 team leads for the half marathon pick-up.

I was more than exhausted after the weekend, but well worth it!  Now on to Waco for work for most of the week!

Race Report: 3M Half Marathon

This race is special to me, because it was my first half 6 years ago.  I’ve done it every year since with the exception of 1 and I really regret the year I skipped.  Not sure why I like it so much, it’s just a good local race that is always fun.

Course:  New course this year since Waterloo Park is under construction and that was formerly the finish.   The course was good.  Same start, different middle, same end until the last half mile, turned twice and finished in front of the Texas State History museum with a nice view of the state capitol.

The map looks flat, but there were some rises, including a really long one in the middle of the race.  There was a slight hill in the last .3, which people were verbally cursing.

I ran my sister and my mom both up that “hill” before they turned to run the last .1 and hit the chutes.

My mom was really stuggling.  She gave me a scare, I really thought she could possibly collapse.  She said her hip was giving her trouble but kept pushing on her chest.  And at one point she latched on to me to keep herself upright. ACK!  Scary.  I made her walk a little bit to regain her balance.

I knew she was fine after she finished, because she stood in line for a finish line photo, lol.

Crowd/music/cheering:  Was spotty, but that’s how it always is.  The only really empty areas were the first 3 miles, which I barely even noticed.  Not as much music as years past, but I wonder if that’s because people weren’t aware it was a new course this year?

Aid:  Water and Gatorade was fine.  Although Megan and I (we ran together from 6-9) arrived at mile 8 and they seemed to be short of volunteers and didn’t have enough people.  Not a big deal, I got my water, but later in the race, may have been an issue.

Swag:  Their packet is the best around.  Who doesn’t want a bag of useful 3M brand products?  I really love seeing what is new from them every year, they are a really innovative company and always have the neatest products and ideas.

My most coveted items?  Post-its and bandaids.  You can never have enough of either!  Also included were glue, knee brace, lots of scotch tape, sandpaper, giant lint roller, glue, post-it flags all in a re-usable cinch bag.

Like the color of the shirt but not really a fan of the design (it says “fast, easy, fun”), although now it’s an inside joke amongst our friends.  The key to getting the best loot is getting there early.  All of the bags vary with what products they get.  Mom’s was only slightly different from mine.

They had a semi-expo this year, which was lame.  I just picked up my packet and left.

Facilities:  Port-a-potties were plentiful.  Bag check was quick and easy on both ends.

Refreshment:  I got my banana which made me a happy girl.  They have really good post-race food, just stuff I can’t eat due to the gluten:  breakfast tacos, Tiff’s Treats fresh cookies, etc.

That’s ok, my mom ate my share.

Found AK after the race.  Never saw her on course, probably because she ran like a 1:36.

Once all of the troops were in, we moved back up North to the start of the race to get our cars and our brunch on at NXNW Brewery.

I’m weird, I’m just am never really hungry after the race (usually catches up with me that night or the next day).  I make myself eat though.

Who eats shrimp cocktail for brunch?  Weird people like me I guess.  Some of the biggest shrimp I’ve seen.  I also ate majority of the fruit off of Dan’s brunch plate. (he didn’t come to the race, but joined us for food).

It was a perfect morning.

Perfect weather, wonderful race, and PRs all around. Everyone at brunch PR’d at the race.  My mom and sister had HUGE PRs.  I had a pretty big PR, one that will stay around for a while.  I don’t know that i’ll do any more halves in the near future, may be refocusing my priorities.

Things I like Thursday: My mom is awesome

Congrats to my mom who is 1 year back at goal.  She didn’t keep the weight off the first time on WW, sidetracked due to the death of her mother.  She got back on and made goal Jan 24, 2011, which ironically was my grandmothers birthday.  The 2nd time, which stuck, was done in meetings.  Her total loss between 2006 and now is over 50 lbs.  (mine is around 40 lbs)

Her initial loss with Weight Watchers was on the old program, she lost by counting points and walking.  Her 2nd and final loss was right when Points Plus came out in fall 2010.  She lost by doing Points Plus, run-walking, strength training, and some cross training.  She still does everything she did to lose, just eating more P+ values.

She still tracks, works out, and attends meetings weekly, which I believe is key to her success.  She’s seen what works for me, is really the structure she needs in her own life.  Accountability is key.

Her first before and after is here. The before is December 2006, the first after is December 2007.

Here is a photo of us December 2011.

She’ll run her 3rd half marathon this weekend, which is also her 3rd in a year.  That’s pretty awesome.

Race Report: Houston Aramco Half Marathon

June and I around 5 am, pre-race.  Wow, my bib belt really cuts me in half!

Course:  Reminded me of Dallas, lots of potholes and un-even.  I started in the “A” corral with the half marathoners.  Within the corral, there was suggested areas for paces.  I started behind the 1:45.  The start was on-time which was fabulous. It was so crowded, pretty much to the split for the full and half.

The weather was the best distance weather I think i’ve ever had.  Caution low was the best thing I saw all morning!

Crowd/music/cheering:  Was good in spots.  Wasn’t as high energy as I would have thought.  I didn’t hear much music at all.

Aid:  Very hard to move in and out to get water and/or Gatorade.  Streets seemed to be narrow in the aid areas.  Guess I have been used to courses with aid on both sides of the road.

Swag:  packet was full of useless stuff, as are most.  The race shirt was ok, but then again, I hate white shirts.  Finisher shirt was nice (although also white) as was the medal.

Here I am with my running buddy AK, who somehow found me twice on race morning.  She found me afterwards and ON the course!  I lost her during the race, which was fine, I don’t race with anyone.  We ran 3 miles together in Dallas (she slowed down) and a little over a mile on Sunday (she sped up).  I think she finished around 1:40.

I did well in the race, despite having issues sleeping because of my gluten issue the night before.  I didn’t really feel it was a strong race for me mentally or physically, so it must have been the perfect weather that allowed me to have my 4 second PR.

Facilities:  Port-a-potties at the start had no toilet paper in 1 section which was sad.  Bag check was quick and easy on both ends.  Everything post-race was inside which I LOVED.  And it was well organized and spacious.

Refreshment:  I guess for most people, it was probably awesome (sponsored by HEB grocery).  For me, not so much.  They had bananas (which is all I usually want).  The rest was gluten-laden: prepacked snackfoods, biscuits and gravy, breakfast tacos, etc.  They did have a nice area for the drinks with coffee, cocoa, sodas, chocolate milk, water, HEB sports drink, etc.  Needless to say, I only got a banana, which I did not eat (I had one as my first breakfast).

There were also additional booths outside the food area that had Honey Milk and HEB creamy creations ice cream.  Tempting, but I know how that story ends, so I avoided it.

There were probably a million bananas, i’m not even kidding.  Like 5 LONG rows of them!  I thought that many bananas was beautiful, it’s my #1 post-race food.

B1: banana, GF bar
WO: half marathon.  Gel, water, gatorade on course.
S:  mini rice krispy treat, turkey jerky
L: Harvest chicken salad, apple, almonds
S: cooked carrots, cinnamon, and coconut oil
D:  Mighty Fine bacon-jalapeno cheeseburger without a bun.  Brought it home to have on half my cheddar-jalapeno GF bun (because I forgot it at home).  Still haven’t brought myself to eat a burger without some sort of bun.  Dan and I shared an order of fries (which I ate most of before I could grab a photo).

S: Perfect Fit Gluten Free cookie, chocolate chip.  I’d never tried that flavor before, not really a fan.

I graze a lot after races, because I am not really hungry (this is really the ONLY time this happens), but I know I need to eat.  I wasn’t hungry at dinner, but it was necessary.  If you are wondering how many Weight Watchers Points Plus this was (~62).  And no, that’s not unusual for me to do 1 weekend day a week. No deprivation here.  I have at least one really high day a week and have for the last five years, it’s what works for me.

If you are wondering how many calories I burn running a half, not as many as you’d think.  Roughly 850.  I’d venture to say that most WW members would earn more than that.  I have a low RHR and a low burn, I roughly burn 65 calories a mile.  Most people burn around 100 per mile.  Based on that, most people would burn over 1300 calories in a half.  Calories burned has ZERO to do with why I run.

I’d consider the race a success, but it wasn’t one of my best.  I’m still proud of my effort even if it didn’t feel like my best.
